Product Review: Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding

Curly PuddingSo, I’ve tried the Curly Pudding. What I really wanted from this product was the flexibility to wear my hair curly and out without having too much shrinkage or having uneven textures. Primarily, I wanted my hair to look styled.

My hair has two main textures: the front has loose curls and the back has tight curls. I wanted the back to be taken care of and not lose its health due to split ends and neglect. I was hoping that this pudding would be more about moisture and less about hold. So, what did I discover? Well, there were some good things and some bad things.

Good Things:

  • Really stretched out curls
  • Had great curl definition
  • Smelled great

Bad Things:

  • Took a long while to air dry
  • When dry, was too crispy of a hold
  • Left little purple pellets in my hair and flaked
  • Felt like it was not moisturizing
  • Parched my scalp

Overall, I think this product is good if you wash your hair everyday and want a gel-type product. I’m sure if I added some anti-frizz product to the mix, it wouldn’t flake as much. But if you’re like me, where you don’t wash your hair everyday, this may not be for you. When I left it in overnight, the flaking and drying got worse.

The next product that I’ve started to try is the SOMA Solace Anti-Frizz serum. I use it when I blow it straight and it keeps my ends from splitting and allows my natural oils to stay on my scalp – preventing it from flaking. Now that it’s curly, I’m wondering if it will give me enough support for maintaining my ends and scalp, while giving me a little bit of curl definition. I will be writing about that product soon.

The Blended Beauty products seem to be better because they don’t seem to contain alcohol. I would have to recheck the ingredients though. Try the Blended Beauty Styling Butter Creme or something like it. The Miss Jessie’s was very drying. I was surprised myself.

I tried Miss Jessie’s curly pudding and it didn’t do a thing for me my hair. My hair did not shrink as much but then I did a two-strand twist over night. It was dry the next day. Very disappointing, especially after having spoken to an individual from the company to get clarification on how to use the product.

Hi I am surprised to find that Mrs. J products was not good to your hair. I just cut all of my hair off 3 days ago and was really looking forward to trying her products. I guess I will have to do more research before my hair starts to grow out long enough to wear curls. did you try another product? Do you have any suggestions on what works good?

    ajika –

Depending on your curl pattern and the style you want, there are products that give you just moisture, just hold, or both. I would suggest looking at the ingredients and try to keep them as natural as possible. Just like food, if you can’t pronounce the ingredients, you should try to avoid them.

Try Blended Beauty’s Styling Butter, or Jane Carter Hair Nourishing Cream. If you want some hold, you may have to try blending some setting/styling lotion with a moisturizing cream, to avoid having your hair dry out. Check out HoneyFig at http://www.honeyfig.com where they post the ingredients of the products they sell.

The best advice is to get re-acquainted with you hair, see what styles suit your face and taste. Experiment on weekends to see what works best. Take samples of products so that way you’re not committed. And talk to other people with similar curl patterns and see what they use.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the review! See, that’s why I was always reluctant to try this product. I heard a couple people say their hair felt “parched” after using it. That’s disappointing especially considering how much that stuff costs. :(

I tried the curly pudding for the 1st time. I wear 2 strand twists. I like the retention it maintained, kept the twists tight and they did not shrink like another product I use.

I have the butter creme and haven’t tried that yest. I need to discover which of these works best because I can’t afford to continue to buy both. That’s my only thing with this product is that it is very costly and I wonder if they really have to charge $58, most products are $10 or under and they work fine.

Next, I plan to try it with a loose ‘fro, that’s why I originally purchased it.

I have been wanting to try Miss Jessie’s products because I have heard so much about them but afer reading these comments I think I will try something else for my natural hair. It seems to work best on people with “mixed” heritage.

I’m so glad I found this wonderful blog. I wanted a site I could get reviews on natural hair products. Thanks so much for putting this site together. I’ve had my hair natural for about 4 years but at times I get lazy and press my hair. I’m really interested in managing my hair with great products that moisturize my hear and keep a great style. I was just about to purchase Miss Jessie’s products but I’ve decided to try another line based upon your reviews. Thanks again for producing such a great site for nature hair women.

My daughter has kinky curly hair and I have tried many products on both of our hair, so far I like the Blended Beauty products, I use the Butter me Up product to tame the frizzies and for her edges and it works very well. I have also tried Kinky Curly, the product works well if you use it right, which is very little amount. But it is an expensive product to have shipped, they need to implement smaller packaging for that product.

Mod Note: I understand our culture is a very strong influence on who we are and how we see the world, but as the blog says, my natural hair is NOT something to be “tamed”. Even the frizzies!

I used Miss Jessie’s curly pudding (scented) and had an allergic reaction to it. I got hives everywhere the pudding or my hair touched. My whole face,my shoulders, neck, ears, everywhere. In all my 20 years of using thousands of products, I’ve never had a reaction to any of them. I looked at the ingredients and there were a few things that I have never seen before, probably one of those items did it. So test it first ladies.

I used Miss Jessie’s curly pudding on my hair and twisted it last night. I was pleasantly surprised to see how great my hair looked this morning when I took the twist out. I would recommend this product…

I am always open to new products and Miss Jessies has worked well for my hair. I am not of Mixed Heritage but it gives me a great hold. I have found with what ever product I use by who ever I MUST give moisture in the morning. I use the curly puddy to set my hair and the butter creme to moisturize DAILY! Small amount and fingure through. I 2 strand twist with the curly puddy, sit under the dryer 45 minutes ( air dry doesn’t work well for me my hair is TOOO thick! unless I am wearing the twist for 3 -4 days), take out in the morning and finger thru with the butter creme. Sleep in a satin cap get up in the morning and fluff with the butter creme. It last about a week. Over the weekend it becomes a puff. I brush it back spray a little water on the front and use the butter creme to smooth as needed ( no alchol gel if you want but the butter creme is fine). You hair must me WET dripping for the product to work well. Hope all is well and this helps some I love it!
